Two years after the end of the world race, Dr. Peter Tezla continues to research the information he gathered on the wheel of power while it was still in his possession. However he finds that Gelorum has returned now fully repaired and with her army of racing drones having been upgraded and she is attempting to get the wheel of power again. He enters Highway 35 trying to stop the drones but fails and is greatly injured just as the drones finally get the wheel. He manages to escape back to earth and the drones begin to turn Hot Wheels city into their new headquarters. Meanwhile in California Vert, Kurt, Taro, and Markie have now joined street racing teams Teku and Metal Mainiacs. During a race on a cliffside Gig arrives telling the formers worldrace drivers that Tezla needs their help. Arriving at Tezla’s old base from the world race, with some of their new teammates for extra help, they find it partially destroyed, Kadeem appears and takes them to the acceleadrome, Tezlas new base which consists of a massive track that loops around the inside of a large cavern hidden inside a mesa. He appears on a hologram in the middle of the cavern and tells them what he has found new knowledge from the wheels research. Now that the wheel has been taken from its stand in Highway 35, the drones have control over the dimension’s portals. But the wheels was not the final part of the accelerons test. Each of the symbols on the wheel represents one of the racing realms, dimensions that have tracks that go through a signal element in the hardest way possible for driving conditions. (There are 15 realms that are in the series, 3 that the drones have already completed before the beginning of the series so they don't show up only the accelechargers, but there are more realms in the card game.) The drones have been entering the realms and each time a realm is finished the first person to reach the end obtains an accelecharger, which gives a car the ability to drive through any condition that relates to the realm that it was won in. Discovering that a hologram of the wheel is alwas in sync with the actual wheel, a large hologram acts as a portal to the racing realms, the drivers enter the realms to try to stop the drones but find it harder than the world race because the wheel itself decides when to open the realms and that each realm only stays open for 1 hour with no way out. As the race to stop the drones rages on, drivers are trapped in the realms, grudges between the teams grow, and a new enemy force appears that attempts to defeat both the drones and the humans. The race goes on as the secret of the accelerons test comes to unveil itself. The accelechargers are the keys to having the wheel of power open the portal to the acceleron homeworld. Will the human drivers get to the finish first, or will the racing drones?

Thomas is shocked to learn that there is an engine with a branchline as famous as his and that the engine might visit. The engine, Stepney, has gotten bored with the Bluebell Railway and is delighted to discover he has been invited to visit the North Western Railway. When Thomas hears the news, he is jealous and refuses to meet Stepney, but the others welcome him and he works with Duck happily all day. When it's time for Thomas' last train, he is furious to be shunted to let another train pass, and amazed to find Stepney pulling it. Thomas grumbles next morning, but Stepney explains the situation and flatters Thomas, who proceeds to tell Stepney about his branchline.
