I wanted to capture how fast the time goes by when a loved one comes to visit. My mother came in for 6 weeks from Israel. I let the camera roll, as usual, while I took her to the airport. Because footage of driving tends to be boring, I sped it up a bit and added bits of footage that I took during my mothers stay in Florida.

A cop was coming up behind me with his lights on and he got stuck behind traffic right away at first so I started easing up on the throttle 'cause I didn't think he was going to get a crush on me. As soon as traffic broke, he hauled ass after me. That's right at the end when I started faking my lane intentions. As soon as he got stuck left, I split us with the bridge. If you watch the speedo, you can see me decelerate from 145mph in just a few seconds while I get ready to "disappear" ... just in case there was anyone nearby on the other end of the radio.

While going through some old unmarked VHS tapes, I found this salvagable clip taken back in our skydiving days. This is some old footage of Dave and myself from around 1993 or 94. We never gave much thought to video cameras back then and to make matters worse, most of the small amount of footage that we did shoot, I taped TV shows over. Sorry for such a small clip, this is all that I could find so far and it is surrounded by old TV shows.

This video means a lot to me for several reasons. First, and most obvious, the backdrop is the site of the 9-11 terrorist attacks against the United States as well as against the ideals of freedom. Second, I hold family and friends in the highest regards and this flight to New York was one of the few instances where I found myself with both my sister Ruthie and one of my best friends since high school, Dave the pilot/instructor, both of whom I rarely get the chance to spend any time with. Third, and least obvious, as a videomaker, it was important for me to do something special with this rather ordinary footage. I attempted to capture the feeling of loss as we flew over "ground zero" and at the same time, capture the beauty of flight, the beauty of my sister, and the general feeling of timelessness one experiences while in flight. Mom does not like the idea of Ruthie flying with us in "dangerous" airplanes so we had to sneak her with us to New York.

When creativity fails you, just play with the zoom button. I was just curious to see how much would be lost in translation from idea to video and I had no intention of posting this, that is why the shoes and cat are visible behind me, I know that they are distracting and further detract from whatever effect that I had originally envisioned. Knowing well that I would never get around to reshooting any clips, I decided to post this because I felt that posting something would be better than posting nothing at all.

My camera never far, and stumbling upon these cards and pictures quite unexpectedly while visiting a loved one, I felt compelled to make this video quickly before the "feeling" and the "motivation" left me. The poem at the end serves two purposes. First, the text, in blue, primes ones mind of the sky and offers a clue as to the purpose of the video. Second, the ascending text serves as a metaphor, that of a soul rising into the sky. It originates low, in the grave, and rises, as a soul would rise, up into heaven... You shouldn't be here and I'm so sorry that you died.

I was fishing for cops but I drove all the way to Ft. Lauderdale and much to my chagrin, no cops anywhere. The vibration is hell on the camera so I save the fastest riding for the red and blue lights. I ride with maximum protective gear and I have shorty mirrors so I can fit between tight rows of cars. I rarely ride out of my "comfort zone" and every ride I take as seriously as a military mission. For any non riders out there, it may appear as though I am riding recklessly. I am not riding recklessly, I understand the limitations of my bike, my tires, my brakes, other drivers and myself.
