After the demise of his progressive rock band Curved Air, Copeland was anxious to form a new three-piece group and join the burgeoning London punk scene. Singer-bassist Sting and guitarist Henry Padovani began rehearsing with Copeland in January 1977, and they recorded their first Police single, "Fall Out"/"Nothing Achieving," the following month. Acting Manager Paul Mulligan paid for the recording of this first single. In March and April, the threesome toured as a support act for Cherry Vanilla as well as Wayne County & the Electric Chairs.

In May, ex-Gong musician Mike Howlett invited Sting and veteran guitarist Andy Summers to form Strontium 90 with him, as a project band for a Gong reunion. The drummer Howlett had in mind for this band, Chris Cutler, was unavailable to play, so Sting brought along Stewart Copeland. Strontium 90 recorded several demo tracks at Virtual Earth Studios, and then performed at a Gong reunion concert in Paris on May 28, 1977. An album with some of these studio and live tracks (with the first recorded version of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic") was released twenty years later in 1997 under the name Strontium 90: Police Academy. The foursome also performed at a London club as "The Elevators" in July 1977.

In July 1977, Copeland, Sting, Padovani, and Summers began performing as a four-piece version of the Police. Padovani's relatively limited ability as a guitarist meant that his tenure in the band was short, and soon after an aborted recording session with producer John Cale on August 10, Padovani left the band and Summers took over sole guitar duties. This lineup of Copeland, Sting, and Summers would endure for the rest of Police history.

Sting proved to be a capable songwriter. He had previously spent time as a secondary school English teacher, and his lyrics are noted for their literary awareness and verbal agility. Material in the later album Ghost in the Machine was inspired by the writings of Arthur Koestler, and material in Synchronicity was prominently inspired by the writings of Carl Jung. "Tea in the Sahara" on the latter album showed interest in the work of author Paul Bowles as well.

The Police, along with The Clash, are notable as one of the first mainstream white bands to adopt reggae as a predominant musical form, and to score major international hits with reggae-styled material. Although ska and reggae were already very popular in the United Kingdom, the style was little known in the United States or other countries. Prior to the emergence of the Police, only a handful of reggae songs — such as Eric Clapton's 1974 cover rendition of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" or Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion" — had enjoyed any significant chart success. The bleached blonde hair that would become a trademark of the band was a lucky accident, occurring before they cut their first album. The band, desperate for money, was asked to do a commercial for Wrigley's Spearmint chewing gum on the condition that they dye their hair blonde.

Author: spineysongs
Keywords: police sting summers copeland uk pop
Added: Tue, 14 Aug 2007 22:49:57 GMT

Video codes to display this video on your website!

http://www.livevideo.com

The band was originally led by bassist, songwriter and singer Phil Lynott. They are well known for their 1976 song "The Boys Are Back in Town" - a major international hit still played on hard rock and classic rock radio stations.

Critic John Dugan writes that "As the band's creative force, Lynott was a more insightful and intelligent writer than many of his ilk, preferring slice-of-life working-class dramas of love and hate influenced by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, and virtually all of the Irish literary tradition." Van Morrison was a major influence as revealed in an interview with Phil Lynott in the movie Thin Lizzy the Rocker: A Portrait of Phillip Lynott. American groups Little Feat and Bob Seger also influenced Lizzy.Their music covered much territory (including hints of country and traditional folk music), but is generally classified as traditional heavy metal or hard rock.

Though others had earlier used similar techniques, Thin Lizzy is widely recognised as one of the first hard rock bands to employ double lead guitar harmony (the twin guitar clash) - a technique pioneered by Wishbone Ash in the UK, whilst independently in the USA by Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band. This style was later refined and popularised by bands of the emerging New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden especially. The latter group in particular has praised Thin Lizzy extensively and even covered the song "Massacre" from Lizzy's popular Live and Dangerous album. Examples of this duel guitar harmony technique include "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Cowboy Song" from Jailbreak. Brian Robertson's unconventional use of the wah-pedal as an extension of the instrument during soloing rather than as a purely rhythmic effect, as described in the Total Accuracy video "Still in Love with the Blues" (featuring Brian Robertson & Stuart Bull), is a distinctive and influential sound.

Lynott is one of the few black men to achieve significant success in hard rock.
Thin Lizzy is an Irish hard rock band who formed in Dublin in 1969.

As well as being a multiracial band, members were drawn from both sides of the Irish border and from both Catholic and Protestant communities.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (often abbreviated to OMD) are a synth pop group whose founder members are originally from the Wirral Peninsula, UK. OMD record for Virgin Records

As teenagers, Humphreys and McCluskey were involved in several unsigned Wirral Peninsula bands, including Equinox, Pegasus, and the short-lived Hitlerz Underpantz. McCluskey would usually sing and play bass guitar, whilst electronics enthusiast Humphreys initially began as a roadie, graduating to keyboards. The pair shared a love of electronic music, particularly Brian Eno and Kraftwerk.

By 1977, McCluskey & Humphreys put together seven-piece (three singers, two guitarists, bassist, drummer, and keyboard player) Wirral 'supergroup' The Id, whose line-up included drummer Malcolm Holmes and McCluskey's girlfriend Julia Kneale on vocals. The group began to gig regularly in the Merseyside area, performing original material (largely written by McCluskey and Humphreys). They had quite a following on the scene, and one of their tracks ("Julia's Song") was included on a compilation record of local bands called Street to Street. Meanwhile, Humphreys & McCluskey collaborated on a side-project called VCL XI (named after a valve from the diagram on the cover of Kraftwerk's Radio-Activity album), where they pursued their more bizarre electronic experiments, often working with tape collages, home-made kit-built synthesisers, and circuit-bent radios.

is it like today?
World Party is a successful British pop/rock band, which is essentially the solo project of its multi-talented only member, Karl Wallinger. The band was started in 1985 after Wallinger amicably left The Waterboys. The name "World Party" reflects Wallinger's Green and radical interests.
World Party's music is hard to categorise, being a tuneful but sophisticated pop and rock combination, with elements of folk, funk, R n B and soul thrown in with a lot of sound samples to give a "recycled" feel in accordance with the band's "Green" image. Wallinger cites as influences The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Junior Walker, Neil Young (that love of sublime guitar solos), and Prince (most obviously on the Goodbye Jumbo track "Love Street"). Wallinger sings and plays most of the instruments himself, using multitracking to create a polished studio sound. Lyrically, many of the songs feature thoughtful and occasionally political sentiments.

The first album was Private Revolution, released in 1987, which yielded two minor hits in the UK, "Private Revolution" and "Ship of Fools", however the latter was to reach number 4 in Australia and number 27 in the USA (when the album charted); but it wasn't until the follow up, Goodbye Jumbo (1990) that World Party came to more widespread notice. This album yielded two significant hits - "Put the Message in the Box" (#39 in the UK) and "Way Down Now". Goodbye Jumbo was voted album of the year by Q magazine and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in the USA. The influence of British Invasion rock on World Party's music was much more obvious on this effort, from the "hoo hoo" chorus on "Way Down Now" coming straight from the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," to the album photography that was laid out in the same manner as the promotional poster from the Beatles' so-called "White Album."

The third album, Bang! (1993), was a bigger success in chart placing terms, reaching number 2 in the UK album chart, with the track "Is It Like Today?" also being a successful single in Europe, but sales were already on the slide. Even so, the fourth album, Egyptology (1996), written following the death of Wallinger's mother, was commercially disastrous, although "She's The One" won an Ivor Novello award and was subsequently recorded by Robbie Williams. The album Dumbing Up was released in 2000 on the band's own label, and was a real return to form, arguably Wallinger's best work since Goodbye Jumbo. Shortly afterwards, however, Wallinger was struck down by an aneurysm that left him unable to speak.

After a long rehabilitation, Wallinger re-emerged onto the scene in 2006. With his back catalogue reclaimed from EMI, a distribution deal was struck (via his own Seaview label) with Universal, and he played his first live show in a decade at the Austin-based South by Southwest festival. Further US dates have been set up for May and June 2006.
world party

      <media:category>Music</media:category>

is it like today?

Though critically acclaimed, and considered by many to have released some of the best pop albums of the decade, the band never broke through to the mainstream, and had only moderate commercial success.
They debuted in 1982 with their self-released single "Lions In My Own Garden: Exit Someone" - songwriter Paddy McAloon wanted a song title where the first letters of the words spelled out "LIMOGES" (where his former girlfriend was staying at the time). Their first album was Swoon, a collection of quirky pop songs in the same vein as "Lions...", released on the Kitchenware record label in early 1984. The following year saw the release of their second album, the Thomas Dolby-produced Steve McQueen (released in the U.S. as Two Wheels Good when McQueen's estate expressed their displeasure with the title). Either way, it was so highly-praised by the critics that even the shy and retiring McAloon remarked: "I'm probably the greatest songwriter in the world, you know." Subsequently, they recorded Protest Songs which found only limited release, but yielded the song "Life of Surprises", which later became the title track for their greatest hits compilation.

Their biggest commercial UK success came with an arguably atypical track for the Sprouts, the 1988 single "The King of Rock 'n' Roll", taken from the From Langley Park to Memphis album. In 1990, Jordan: The Comeback, which was a hit in the UK, was nominated for a Brit award. Though the music was more accessible than their earlier material, the lyrics and subject matter remained characteristically oblique and suggestive (McAloon has often cited Stephen Sondheim as an influence). In addition to its religious overtones, perhaps reflecting McAloon's education in a Catholic seminary, there were several allegorical songs about a character who embodied a mix of Howard Hughes, Jesse James, and Elvis Presley. McAloon has alluded in interviews to several albums-worth of songs that he has written but are unreleased/unrecorded including amongst others, concept albums based on the life of Michael Jackson (Behind the Veil), the history of the world (Earth: The Story So Far) and Zorro the Fox about a fictional superhero.

Their greatest hits, Life of Surprises: The Best of Prefab Sprout yielded their biggest U.S. hit, "If You Don't Love Me", which spent several weeks in the top 10 on the dance charts. McAloon joked in the liner notes about the band's lack of touring over the past decade.

In 1997 Prefab Sprout released a new album 'Andromeda Heights' in the UK. A short, but well received UK tour followed in 2000. This tour (& the subsequent album) didn't feature Wendy Smith, who by this time had reportedly left the band. In 2001 the band released 'The Gunman and Other Stories' a concept album themed on the American West. The opening track 'Cowboy Dreams' was originally a success for the British actor Jimmy Nail. These albums while critically acclaimed in places, have not been as commercially successful (and only been available in the United States on import).

Their greatest hits collection, 1999's 38 Carat Collection, was released in the United States in 2001 with a new title The Collection.

After being diagnosed with a medical disorder which impaired his vision Paddy McAloon released the spoken word/instrumental album 'I Trawl The Megahertz under' his own name in 2003 on the EMI Liberty label. As of 2006, McAloon had suffered another setback: his hearing had deteriorated, reportedly due to Ménière's disease.

In January 2007, a remastered edition of Steve McQueen was announced for a UK release in April 2007 with a second disc of recently recorded acoustic versions of eight of the album's tracks to be included as well. The remastering was done by original Steve McQueen producer Thomas Dolby. Homogenic was her first conceptually self-contained album and is regarded as one of Björk's most experimental and extroverted works to date, with enormous beats that reflect the landscape of Iceland, most notably in the song "Jóga", which fuses lush strings with rocky electronic crunches.

The emotionally-charged album contains a string of memorable music videos, several of which received airplay on MTV, especially the epic "Bachelorette" directed by frequent collaborator Michel Gondry and "All Is Full of Love", which was directed by Chris Cunningham and became an alt-rock hit in 1999. The single 'All is full of love' was also the first DVD single to ever be released in the USA which paved the way for other artists to include DVD video and other multimedia features with their singles.

The album eventually reached gold status in the States in 2001 and platinum in 2006. In 2000 Björk played the role of Selma, a blind factory worker in Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark, and subsequently recorded the soundtrack, simply named "Selmasongs".

Aphex Twin (born Richard David James on August 18, 1971 in Limerick, Ireland) is an electronic music artist, credited with pushing forward the genres of techno, ambient, acid, and drum and bass.
The first Aphex Twin album, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, was released in 1992 on R&S Records. John Bush of the All Music Guide described it as a "watershed of ambient music". Pat Blashill of Rolling Stone wrote of the album: "Aphex Twin expanded way beyond the ambient music of Brian Eno by fusing lush soundscapes with oceanic beats and bass lines". Critics also noted that the songs were recorded on cassette and that the sound quality was "relatively poor".[9][10]

Warp Records pressed and released Selected Ambient Works Volume II in 1994. The sound was much less beat-driven than the previous volume, and the track names were mainly described with circles and pie charts rather than song titles in words. James made unverifiable claims to The Wire magazine and other media that these songs were inspired by lucid dreams and synaesthesia.

o Sample of "Ventolin (Video Version)", taken from the album ...I Care Because You Do
o Problems listening to the file? See media help.

For his 1995 release, ...I Care Because You Do, James used an image of his face for the album cover, a motif that would continue in his later records. The album was a compilation of songs composed between 1991 and 1994, and represented a mish-mash of Aphex Twin's various music styles. This was Aphex Twin's last record of the 1990s to use mostly analogue synthesizer; later releases made more use of computers and software synthesizers. Aphex Twin collaborated with minimalist composer Philip Glass to make an orchestral version of one of the songs from this album.

In 1995 (primarily with Hangable Auto Bulb), he began releasing more material composed on computers, and embraced a drum and bass sound combined with nostalgic childhood themes and strange computer-generated acid lines. Aphex Twin's early adoption of software synthesizers predated the later popularity of using computers to make music. The late 1990s saw his music become more popular and mainstream, as he released the Richard D. James Album and two singles, "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker", which were shown on MTV and were cover features of music magazines including NME

The Church are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1980. Initially associated with New Wave and the neo-psychedelic sound of the mid 1980s, their music later became more reminiscent of "prog rock", featuring long instrumental jams and complex guitar interplay.

The Church's debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), earned them their first radio hit "The Unguarded Moment". They were signed to major labels in Australia, Europe and the U.S. However, the U.S. label was dissatisfied with their second album and dropped the band without releasing the album. This put a dent in their commercial success, but they made a comeback in 1988, with the album Starfish and the American Top 40 hit "Under The Milky Way." Subsequently commercial success proved elusive, however, and the band weathered several line-up changes in the 1990s. The last decade has seen them settle on their current lineup, which features the original three founding members plus drummer Tim Powles.

A survey among readers of Melbourne newspaper "The Age" garnered 37 000 votes and the majority chose "Under the Milky Way" as the best Australian song of the last 21 years.

Author: spineysongs
Keywords: the church easy
Added: Sun, 28 Jan 2007 16:02:48 GMT

Video codes to display this video on your website!

http://www.livevideo.com
